Beginners Electromagnetism Class

Hello Everyone

I encourage any and all to participate, if only to help me. We haven't talked about how we are going to run this thread much.
Any comment or suggestions are welcome...My Ideal was to run a loose thread..not meaning to go off the subject of TTB and his work, but to be simpler. To start with. I'm hoping some of the teck. people will help with the correct meanings to the subjects at hand. But, I have also seen this site go off the topic and come back with a Jem. So, lets try and do this for Linda.

Now, Rose had a couple of ideals of what we might start with, so have I and Linda also..I feel like we should start with the basic subject Linda suggested. (Linda, I was sick when we 1st started to talk about this so excuse me if I have it wrong)
Not only because it's Linda...But, as I've thought about this I keep coming back to the same thing..and that is to understand the other thngs on the board we should start at the beginning. (I know many of you have already covered this).

Now I 1st looked on winipedia for a basic definition, it didn't satisfie me..although there is some important things in it exspecially if you go futher down into it. I'm not asking you to do this unless you want. I just want to get a basic handle on the concept that continues to come up.

For personal reasons I have tried to stay away from the other sites, I will now have to go back and look for more information..which I will do.

As you all know I am personally fond of the word Electrohydrodynamics (EHD). You should have seen the blank stares I got in the sixties when I mentioned it.

Lets keep this thread for comments on how we think things are going... but everyone should know to check in on the Science Forum to find the door to the classroom! Karen just rang the bell so..... See you there! Linda

Getting back to a serious note, Pee Tee is most likely right, because Just starting with basics doesn't mean it's going to stay that way, I just ( and for my own sake) want to get that word down and undersandable...It reaches out to almost everything TTB did. Or I should say what I know he did.

I do want to say however I think he put that word up in bold so I'd spell it right

Hello All,

I thought that I put up a definition for this, appearently, I didn't do it correct.... I wasn't happy with that definition at any rate so I will search for a more satisfactory one. But, while I'm doing that I have found an interesting site, that I hope comes up correctly...If it does you'll see a history of Electromagnetism, old but interesting .I will also put up the site owners 1st statement, so we get an ideal of what we are getting into.

Okay I've found a better explaination, however, to understand more than just a rudimentary understanding there is a lot to understand first...Let me put up this site and a simple explaination and see what out put you have. That way I'll know how fr back we should go to understand this concept...while I'm futher looking please give me some input not much to start with, but a lot to move on too...

Electromagnetism is the interaction of particles with an electrical charge. Charged particles at rest interact through electrostatic forces, while in motion they interact through both electrical and magnetic forces.
For a long time, the electric and magnetic forces were considered to be different forces, but they were finally unified by James Clerk Maxwell in 1864, under Maxwell's equations. In the 1940s, quantum electrodynamics consolidated electromagnetism with quantum physics.

Electromagnetism is perhaps the most obviously prevalent force in our world, as it can affect things at a reasonable distance and with a fair amount of force.

Is this understanable or do I dig deeper or anyone want to give a shot at a easy defintion...LOL

Now I like this information better it will help to understand what a hard subject I picked 1st...But, I'm either learning by myself or with you. Still committed to putting a face on this difficult subject.

This is an easy read, so I won't bother to write a summery for it.

At some point I believe we need to understand some of Enstiens work and theories...I'm I correct advanced class >G<

Enough to think about. for a start.

Off to a wonderful and thoughtful start Karen! Congratulations.You picked a great subject! As soon as I can sit down quietly I will read that link and post some questions, which I am sure that I will have.

I think what we have uncovered here ( I notice it anyway) is that we have so many wonderful minds on this forum and most of them are so well versed in all of these concepts that they just take it for granted that we all know what they are talking about when they start mentioning this technical term or that... when most of the time if some of the readers are like me.... they lost me with the first sentence! So YES... we need to know BASICALLY what we are all talking about and Electromagnetism is a grand start. From the use of the english language most can figure it has something to do with electricity and magnetism.... but we sure need to know more than just that!

There is some interesting things that lead to the blending of the two words...I just assumed (made an ass of U and Me) it was always just one, but now I'm starting to see just how complicated it really is..

I just want to get some fedback of where to really start at, a level everyone can be comfortable with.

Perhaps it is best to begin with magnetism and electricity separately and then show how they always seem to go "hand-in-hand."
Further demonstration of how one effects the other, and perhaps some small experiments that can demonstrate the "principles" at work (or play) here. It is quite possible that since you are beginning from a point in which nothing is "assumed" in the context of who know what nor what do they really know, then by your own classroom experimentation it will be possible to see how these simple fundamental energies can be used to build more complex structures.

(Is it too early to add in Gravity?)

Since our goal here is to produce an understanding of the science of Dr. Brown, may I suggest that you place gravity on the TTB triangle along with magnetism and electricity at the other apexes. In this way, we may also be able do see how each is a cause and effect on the others.
